HAPPY FEBRUARY!!!!

learning how to form words with letters

In the middle of my sixth-grade year, our family moved from one end of the state to the other and I was forced to make new friends in the middle of the school year. My southern draw drew a lot of unnecessary attention in the new northern climate, so I elected to not talk much, if at all. After a week or two of relative silence, I received a note, passed up the row when the teacher wasn’t looking. Carefully written cursive (what?) posed this question: Do you want to be my friend? Check Yes or No.

My eleven-year-old heart swelled at this unexpected act of kindness, but at the same time, my mind screamed with caution. Could this request be trusted or was this just another method of getting me to open my mouth for more torturous ridicule? I wanted so badly to check Yes.

The deciding element of that note was the addition of the crudely drawn daisy beside the date at the top of the page.

Decades later I continue to begin each month with a journal entry welcoming in the new month.

Happy February… a few days late.
